Signs You Are Experiencing This Problem

  • Yellow warning icon on printer in Device Manager
  • Error: 'Printer driver is unavailable'
  • Printer stopped working after Windows or macOS update
  • Driver installation fails or gets stuck
  • Printer works for one user but not another on the same computer

Common Causes

  • Windows Update replaced or removed the printer driver with an incompatible version
  • Multiple conflicting driver versions installed for the same printer
  • Incomplete driver uninstall left corrupted registry entries
  • Wrong driver version for the operating system (e.g., 32-bit driver on 64-bit Windows)
  • Manufacturer driver not compatible with Windows 11 — particularly for older models

What to Check First

  • Check Device Manager for your printer. Open Device Manager, expand 'Printers' or 'Other devices', and look for a yellow exclamation mark. Right-click the printer and select 'Properties' to see the error code.
  • Note the exact error message — error codes like Code 10, Code 19, Code 43, or 'Driver unavailable' each point to different issues.
  • Check if the issue started after a Windows Update. If so, the update may have replaced your driver. The fix is to remove the current driver completely and install the correct version.
  • Before reinstalling a driver, the old driver must be completely removed — including the driver package from the print server. Simply uninstalling the printer is not enough.
  • Find your printer manufacturer's official driver download page and note your exact printer model number before contacting support.

If none of these steps resolve the problem, a Nanicto technician can connect remotely and check your printer configuration directly. We will diagnose the problem and determine whether it can be resolved remotely.
